SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) has been named the College Sports Madness Mountain West Preseason Field Player of the Year, the website announced today. Kathy Van Wyk was also picked as the preseason coach of the year.
Miles was joined on the College Sports Madness preseason first team by redshirt senior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) and sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS), while senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) and redshirt junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) were each second-team picks.
Last year, Miles was named a second-team Easton All-American, third-team NFCA All-American, second-team NFCA All-West Region selection and the MW Co-Player of the Year after shattering 11 school single-season records. Those records included batting average (.429, previous best was .389), on-base percentage (.519, previous best was .467), slugging percentage (.909, previous best was .633), OPS percentage (1.428, previous best was 1.053), runs (62, previous best was 41), extra-base hits (42, previous best was 25), doubles (20, previous best was 14), home runs (20, previous best was 15), RBIs (49, previous best was 48), total bases (159, previous best was 102) and walks (34, previous best was 28).
Arbino was also an all-Mountain West selection a year ago, going 13-11 with a 2.02 ERA over 163 innings. She struck out 107 against 38 walks and had four saves. The 2.02 ERA and four saves led the league. The right-hander was one of three pitchers on the preseason first team.
Jordan was named the 2012 MW Freshman of the Year and an all-league pick after hitting .324 (third on the team) and leading the team with 12 stolen bases. She was also second on the squad in runs (28), walks (16) and on-base percentage (.400). She was placed as the lone utility pick on the first team.
May is one of three pitchers on the preseason all-MW second team. Last year, the right-hander went 2-5 with a 3.63 ERA over 44 1/3 innings. She was even better in MW play, going 0-0 with a 1.31 ERA over 5 1/3 innings. A career .261 hitter with five home runs, May will also see time at first base in her final season in 2013.
Jackson is the final Aztec on the preseason all-conference team, one year after hitting .311 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. The right fielder also had 11 doubles (tied for second on team) and owned a .584 slugging percentage (third on team). She was an all-MW selection.
SDSU is coming off a 32-24 season in 2012, advancing to the NCAA tournament for a school-record fifth consecutive year and capturing its fifth Mountain West title. San Diego State went 2-2 in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional before being eliminated in the regional championship game for the second straight year, falling just short of the NCAA Super Regionals (equivalent to the Sweet 16). The Aztecs finished with single-season program records in slugging percentage (.466), doubles (79), home runs (58), RBIs (237) and total bases (692), and received votes in both national polls.
SDSU kicks off its 2013 slate in Tempe, Ariz., when it competes in Arizona State's Kajikawa Classic from Feb. 7-9. Two of San Diego State's five games at the classic will be against 2012 NCAA tournament teams, including Northwestern (Feb. 8) and Women's College World Series qualifier Arizona (Feb. 9). The Aztecs will also play Creighton (Feb. 7), Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 8) and Western Michigan (Feb. 9).
