Aztecs Fall In Mountain West Tourney Second-Round Game

May 12, 2005

SAN DIEGO - Sixth-seeded San Diego State fell victim to the long ball and second-seed UNLV Thursday night in the second round of play in the Mountain West Conference Softball Championship. The Rebels swatted a pair of homers in a 4-1 win over the host Aztecs in a winners' bracket game.

SDSU, now 27-29, will play New Mexico in an elimination game Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. UNLV advances to face the winner of game six, Friday at 7 p.m. An Aztec victory in the morning game would advance San Diego State to a 4:30 p.m. contest against top-seeded BYU.

UNLV opened the scoring in the first inning on an unearned run. But San Diego State answered quickly in the top of the second on a solo homer by Taryin Casillas, her fourth of the year.

The Rebels recaptured the lead in the third inning when Maggie Livreri slugged a two-out, two-run homer to stake the Rebels to a 3-1 lead. They added another solo homer in the fifth off the bat of left fielder Marissa Nichols to complete the scoring.

San Diego State is trying to reach the Mountain West championship game for the fifth straight season.
