Aztec Softball Defeats New Mexico in 14-Inning Battle

May 9, 2003

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The longest softball game in Mountain West Conference Tournament history finally ended Friday morning with a 4-3 San Diego State victory over New Mexico.

The game was the first for the top-seeded Aztecs in the MWC Tournament. The Aztecs, 37-17 on the season, will advance to Friday's 5 p.m. game against an opponent still to be determined.

San Diego State trailed New Mexico 3-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. But single runs in the sixth and seventh forced extra innings. Due to darkness, the game was suspended Thursday night and resumed at 9 a.m. Friday morning.

With two out in the bottom of the 14th frame, sophomore catcher Danielle Touhey singled to center field to bring home the game-winning run in junior first baseman Jacque Vaca, who opened the inning with a leadoff single. Junior third baseman Kelcy Murphy advanced Vaca to second before freshman Bridgette Caron laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Vaca at third.

Freshman shortstop Bianca Cruz tied the game at 3-3 with her solo shot to center field yesterday in the seventh inning with SDSU on the verge of a first-round upset loss.
