SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 12/10 UCLA in the final game of the San Diego Classic I on Sunday at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs fell to 10-9 with the loss, while the Bruins improved to 18-2.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when UCLA plated three runs, thanks to a two-run homer by Stephany LaRosa and an RBI single by Jessica Hall.
The Bruins then tacked on four additional runs in the seventh on a RBI single by Brittany Moeai, an RBI double by Alyssa Tiumalu and a two-run single by Devon Lindvall.
SDSU had plenty of scoring chances with seven hits and two walks, but couldn't cash in with runners on base or in scoring position. San Diego State finished the game 1-for-17 (.059) with runners on base and 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while stranding eight baserunners. The Aztecs' best opportunities came in the second, where they left the bases loaded, and in the third and fifth, where they led off with a double both times but couldn't get a runner across the plate.
Sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) had two hits, including a double, while senior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Victoria Kobold (Concord, Calif.) each singled and drew a walk.
Senior right-hander Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) took the loss after allowing five runs on 12 hits and a walk over 6 1/3 innings, while striking out four. Freshman left-hander Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) pitched the final 2/3 innings and yielded two runs on two hits and a walk.
Six of SDSU's nine losses this year have come against nationally ranked opponents, including No. 13/14 Arizona (L, 3-2), No. 24/22 Kentucky (L, 4-0), No. 2/1 Oklahoma (L, 4-0), No. 7/7 Missouri (L, 2-1), No. 9/11 Oregon (L, 3-1) and No. 12/10 UCLA (L, 7-0).
