Women's Soccer Sweeps MW Weekly Awards
Sept. 23, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
San Diego State's Hannah Keane and Carli Johnson have been named the Mountain West Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the conference announced today. It is the second career award for both student-athletes.
Keane, a junior from Sacramento, was an offensive threat against crosstown foe San Diego and No. 16 Portland. The forward scored twice vs. the Toreros, which included the game-winner, and attempted a game-high five shots with three coming on net. Her third shot on goal nearly gave her a hat trick as it bounced off the crossbar.
In the game vs. the Pilots, Keane was at it again, giving the Aztecs a 1-0 lead with her header in the 39th minute. The 2012 all-MW first-team selection again finished with a game-high five shots, with two coming on goal, and played the entire 90 minutes.
Johnson, meanwhile, helped San Diego State become the first team this season to shutout USD, both offensively and defensively. The senior from Santa Rosa, who played the full 90 minutes, scored off a corner-kick situation as she headed a Victoria Barba cross past the USD goalkeeper in the 59th minute. As a defender, Johnson helped limit the Toreros to just nine shots and two shots on goal as the Aztecs went on to post a 3-0 win.
On Sunday vs. Portland, Johnson was a part of a backline that blanked the Pilots in the first half. In her 48 minutes of action, the 2012 all-MW first-team choice and tournament MVP put one shot on goal.
For the week, Keane led SDSU in goals (3), points (6), shots (10), shots on goal (5) and game-winning goals (1). Johnson, on the other hand, was second in goals (1), tied for second in points (2) and first in shot percentage (.500) and shot-on-goal percentage (1.000).
This is the eighth time in the history of the Mountain West that San Diego State has won both offensive and defensive awards the same week. The last time it happened was Aug. 27, 2012, when Johnson was the defensive player of the week and Haley Locker was the top offensive player.
Keane, Johnson and the rest of the Aztecs return to action Friday night when they start their title defense and open MW action vs. Fresno State. Game time is 7 p.m. PT at SDSU Sports Deck and admission is free. The league tilt will also be streamed live on GoAztecs.com via the Mountain West Network.
