Aztecs Face UCF and Florida State in Challenging Tournament

Aztecs face tough competition in Kansas * San Diego State travels to the KUStore.com Crimson and Blue Invitational this week, facing the University of Central Florida at 2:30 p.m. CDT on Sept. 12 and Florida State at 9:30 a.m. CDT on Sept. 14. * The Golden Knights of UCF are 3-1-0 and coming off an 18-5-0 season in which the team qualified for the NCAA Tournament. * Florida State is 1-3-0, having lost their first three games to teams ranked in the Top 15 of the NSCAA Top 25 poll. The Seminoles finished 2002 with a 13-7-3 and advanced to the NCAA third round.
Defense completely shuts down LBSU * The Aztecs did not allow a shot on goal in their Sept. 4 victory over Long Beach State, 2-0, marking the first time the SDSU defense has done so since a 5-0 victory over Cincinnati on Sept. 12, 1999.
Castellanos one away from second all-time * Senior forward Kim Castellanos is climbing her way up the record books. She is currently third in career goals with 33, just behind Catherine McGuire (1995-98) who totaled 34 in her illustrious career. Lori LaCoursiere (1996-99) holds the school record with 52. * Castellanos is also third in total points with 75. LaCoursiere holds the Aztec record for total points with 148, while McGuire compiled 103 in her career.
The penalty kick is good ... again! * Senior forward Kim Castellanos scored on a penalty kick at the 26:49 mark of SDSU's 2-0 victory over Long Beach State on Thursday. Combined with her penalty kick against UC Irvine last Monday, she has now made one in each of the last two games and three in the last five dating back to last season when she nailed a clutch game-winner (at the 88:38 mark) in the 2002 Mountain West Conference post-season tournament quarterfinal victory over UNLV, 2-1. She had missed two prior to that during the 2002 regular season.
Pearson climbs up goalkeeper chart * Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson has recorded 61 saves in her two-plus years at SDSU (following a one-year stint at Hawai'i), which places her fifth on San Diego State's all-time list.
Scouting the University of Central Florida * The UCF Golden Knights started off the 2003 campaign with a bang, defeating Pittsburgh, South Florida and Miami in their first three games, before falling to No. ?? Florida, 3-1. * Midfielder Courtney Baines is leading the UCF offense in the early going with two goals, two assists and 11 shots taken. * Goalkeeper Julie Snaman has recorded 13 saves and allowed five goals for a 1.25 goals against average. * San Diego State prevailed in the first meeting between the schools, 4-1, on Oct. 28, 1997, in a game hosted by SDSU.
Scouting Florida State * The Seminoles enter the game with a misleading 1-3-0 record, having fallen to USC, Penn State and Florida in their first three games. All three opponents are ranked in NSCAA's Top 15. Florida State topped Jacksonville, 3-1, on Sunday for their first win of the season. * Florida State's coming off their second trip to the Sweet 16 in three years. * Forward Leah Gallegos is leading the Seminole offense in the early going of the 2003 season, scoring two goals and recording 19 shots. Midfielder Jez Ratliff also has two goals and has recorded seven shots. * The Seminoles play host Kansas on Sept.. 12 prior to meeting the Aztecs on Sept. 14. * Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the schools.
