SAN DIEGO - Senior goalkeeper Aubree Southwick and junior defender Megan McQueeny were both included in the Top Drawer Soccer Mountain West Conference Players to Watch Women's Top 20 list. Southwick checks in at No. 12 as one of just three goalkeepers mentioned, while McQueeny ranks No. 18.
A four-year starter and second-team all-MWC selection in 2009, Southwick enters her senior campaign as San Diego State's all-time career saves leader. She was between the pipes for the duration of SDSU's 16-match unbeaten streak last season, and was named to the 2009 MWC all-tournament team after helping the Aztecs earn their third NCAA Tournament berth. Southwick is off to an impressive start in 2010, registering 22 saves in SDSU's first four matches.
McQueeny earned a number of accolades in her 2009 sophomore campaign. She was named to the 2009 All-MWC first team, and was also selected to the NSCAA All-Pacific Region second team. She started and played in 23 matches last season, a year after leading the team in minutes played as a true freshman. McQueeny helped anchor a vaunted Aztecs defense that held 10 clean sheets and limited 19 opponents to one goal or less.
Southwick and McQueeny are the latest Aztec soccer players to be recognized by Top Drawer Soccer. Raymundo Reza, Khadim Diouf and Jose Altamirano were each named to the website's Pac-10 Men's Top 20 list.
The Aztecs will return to the SDSU Sports Deck this weekend after enduring a brutal road trip to open the season. SDSU has already played a pair of top-10 squads, losing each match 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion. The Aztecs will face Detroit in their home opener at 4 p.m. Friday (Sept. 3) before welcoming Utah State for a 12 p.m. afternoon tilt Sunday (Sept. 5)
