Aug. 22, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team, off to their first 2-0 start since 2006, is receiving votes in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The Aztecs received 11 votes and are the lone team from the Mountain West in the Aug. 21 poll.
SDSU is also ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA Pacific Region poll, trailing only Stanford, UCLA, California and Oregon State. The only other team in the poll from the Mountain West is New Mexico, who sits in a tie for 10th.
This past weekend, the Aztecs earned a double-overtime 1-0 victory against SMU and then picked up a 2-0 win against Arizona State. On Friday against SMU, senior Megan Jurado notched the game-winner in the 104th minute and then the Aztecs used an all-around dominating team performance to blank ASU on Sunday behind goals from sophomores Kelsey Booth and Haley Locker.
For SDSU's successful start, it had two players earn conference player-of-the-week honors. Goalkeeper Rachel Boaz was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week after the redshirt sophomore played all 194 minutes in goal and notching six saves en route to two shutout victories. Booth, meanwhile, was rewarded with conference player-of-the-week honors from CollegeSportsMadness.com.
San Diego State will continue its season-opening five-game home stand tonight when it takes on Saint Francis (Pa.). The non-conference contest with the Red Flash is set for a 5 p.m. PT start at the SDSU Sports Deck. Following their clash with the Red Flash, the Aztecs will remain at home to face off with Seattle on Friday at 5 p.m. PT in a game that was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. Admission to both events is free.
