SAN DIEGO - Senior Jackie Ragudos scored her fourth goal of the season in the second half, but it wasn't enough as No. 2 UCLA defeated the San Diego State women's soccer team, 5-1, on Friday at the SDSU Sports Deck. The five goals scored by the Bruins tied a Sports Deck record that was last accomplished in 2002 when the Aztecs beat UC Riverside, 5-1.
The loss drops SDSU's record to 4-5-2, while the Bruins improve to 6-1-2.
UCLA, which has gone to four consecutive NCAA College Cups, got on the board early when All-American senior Danesha Adams took a pass from fellow All-American sophomore Lauren Cheney for her seventh goal of the season five minutes into the game.
The Bruins out shot the Aztecs 12-0 in the first half and tacked on their second goal at the 43:31 mark when sophomore Kristina Larsen rebounded junior Blake Zerboni's shot and found the back of the net for the first time this season.
The second half began much like the first with UCLA tallying two more goals. Sophomore Kara Lang, in her second game since returning from participating in the FIFA Women's World Cup as a member of team Canada, scored her third goal of the season at the 52:21 mark, while Cheney scored her team-leading ninth goal a minute later.
The Aztecs were able to create more scoring opportunities in the second half as they took six shots.
Ragudos hit on her team-leading fourth goal in the 61st minute as she scored on UCLA senior Ashley Thompson after rebounding a header from senior Jessica Girdner, who was attempting a shot after sophomore Megan Konishi's throw in.
"We gave a really good effort against one of the top teams in the country," Friesen said. "This game will only make us better when we face CS Bakersfield on Sunday and as we head into conference season.
"I liked the way we were able to create some scoring chances that led to our goal and how Millie Allen and Ali Lokanc were able to defend Kara Lang, a player who was playing in the World Cup recently."
The Aztecs will return to the SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday to close out their non-conference schedule against CS Bakersfield. Kickoff against the Roadrunners is slated for 2:30 p.m.
