Feb. 22, 2013
SAN DIEGO - Sophomores Michaela Jarvis and Bailey Ewing scored three goals apiece, leading the San Diego State Lacrosse team to a victory over Saint Mary's in its home opener, 19-6, at Aztec Lacrosse Field on Friday night.
The Aztecs (2-1, 1-0 MPSF) finished the first half on an 8-0 run after the Gaels (0-1, 0-1) knotted the score, 3-3, with 20:22 remaining in the first half. Junior Meris Walsh's goal off an assist from Jarvis put SDSU ahead for good, 4-3, and Jarvis added a score of her own soon after to push the lead to two. Ewing scored the final two goals of the first half, the second with just 30 seconds left before halftime, giving the Aztecs an 11-3 advantage at intermission.
Jarvis recorded five assists, and finished with a team-high eight points. Sophomore Madison Formwalt had two goals and two assists, while Walsh, freshman Felice Artuso and junior Isabelle Pickett each scored two goals. Senior goalkeeper Sammy Slattery had eight saves and sophomore Madison Wallace recorded five ground balls. Sophomore Jade Jones caused two turnovers and scooped up three ground balls.
After playing Saint Mary's to a pair of one-point victories last season, SDSU controlled the majority of Friday's game. The Aztecs out-shot the Gaels 35-19 and caused 17 SMC turnovers, while only committing five. SDSU also had a 16-4 edge in ground balls.
The Aztecs return to action on Friday, March 8, at home against La Salle. The game begins at 7 p.m. PT.
