SDSU Women's Golf Splits Squads For Two Tournaments In Two States
Oct. 12, 2009
The San Diego State women's golf team will split in two this week, as it plays host to the annual Aztec Fall Classic in Chula Vista, Calif., Oct. 12-13, and sends five golfers to the Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 12-14. The Aztec Fall Classic will be held at the par-72, 6,216-yard Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista, Calif. SDSU is among a field of seven total teams, who will play a round of golf each of the two days. This is the only home tournament for the Aztecs, as the team will not play host to an event during the spring campaign. The SDSU `A' squad, ranked 54th-nationally by golfstat.com, heads to New Mexico State for the 18-team Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational. The Aztecs will play 54 holes with a round each day at the par-72, 6,193-yard NMS University Golf Course. SDSU will face tough competition in the field from No. 15 Arizona, No. 35 UC Irvine, No. 32 Idaho and No. 38 Baylor. The Aztec Fall Classic starts at 8 a.m. PT with tee times from the first hole on Monday and a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The Price's "Give `Em Five" Invite features a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MT the first two days and at 8 a.m. MT on Wednesday. The SDSU 'B' squad won the Aztec Fall Classic last season by one stroke over North Dakota State, while the 'A' team was 15th in Las Cruces in 2008. Eleven Golfers Set To Compete For SDSU The `A' team headed to Las Cruces consists of freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), juniors Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) and Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and senior Petra Cole (San Diego, Calif.). The same line-up played in the team's most recent event in Colorado, Sept. 29-30, placing third at the CU Heather Farr Memorial Invite.
Six Aztecs will tee-off at the Aztec Fall Classic, including seniors Ashley Wood (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) and Heather Wilson (Chula Vista, Calif.), junior Kaitlen Miyajima (Wailuku, Maui) and freshmen Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) and Catharina Aasheim (Oslo, Norway). Junior Faith De Guzman (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), who led the team to the 2008 Aztec Fall Classic title by finishing fourth overall, will compete separately as an individual. This will be the first tournament of the year for five of the six SDSU golfers at the Aztec Fall Classic, with the only exception being Clark, who played in the opener in New Mexico. |
