Aztec Golf's Malin Enarsson Named MWC Freshman of the Year
April 18, 2009
SAN DIEGO - Aztec women's golfer Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who led San Diego State in every tournament this season, has been named the 2009 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, the league office announced Saturday evening. Enarsson also was tabbed to the nine-player all-league team, becoming the first Aztec so honored since 2004 and only the fourth overall in the 10-year history of the league.
A true freshman, she finished the regular season with the MWC's fourth-best stroke average of 74.00 and ranked 70th nationally in the Golfstat Cup standings.
Enarsson has posted seven top-10 individual finishes, including in each of SDSU's five spring events. She tied for second at the Aztec Invitational in February, was third at the BYU Dixie Classic in March and tied for 10th at this weekend's conference championships, the highest finish by an SDSU golfer in four years.
During the fall campaign, Enarsson logged a 68 in her first collegiate tournament, posting seven birdies in her final nine holes in Albuquerque, N.M. Ten days later, she became the first Aztec to finish a tournament under par since 2003, carding a 1-under 215 at the CU Heather Farr Invite in Broomfield, Colo. She matched that 54-hole total of 215, which ties for second in the school record book, at the Ken Youel Invite in Hawaii.
Enarsson is the first San Diego State women's golfer to earn an individual player-of-the-year award in Mountain West Conference history.
