Oct. 13, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas - San Diego State's Sirene Blair fired a 2-under par 70 on Sunday to lead the Aztec women's golf team during a soggy opening round of the 40th annual Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club. With her performance, the SDSU freshman finds herself just three shots off the pace in a tie for 11th place heading into Monday's second round.
In the team standings, the Aztecs currently occupy the eighth position, just one stroke in back of seventh-place Denver and two shots behind Tulane for sixth, after posting a collective 2-over 290 on the par-72, 6,143-yard course layout.
Blair, the Mountain West Women's Co-Golfer of the Month for September, continued her strong play on Sunday, mixing five birdies with 10 pars en route to a season-low score of 70. Despite finishing with a pair of bogeys, the South Jordan, Utah native still remains in contention, one of 19 golfers who sit within three shots of Miami's Dani Darquea and Jessica Peng of Mississippi State, who both shot a 5-under 67 to grab a share of the lead after round one.
In addition, Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) finds herself two strokes in back of Blair after recording an even-par 72 for her best round of the year thus far. The SDSU sophomore offset four bogeys with four birdies to finish the day in a tie for the 28th spot with 11 other players.
Similarly, fellow classmate Shannon Lubar (Littleton, Colo.) also logged her lowest round as an Aztec after shooting a 1-over 73, which featured a pair of birdies. The University of Denver transfer notched just three bogeys on the day while collecting 13 pars to tie for the 39th position out of 96 competitors.
Meanwhile, Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finds herself in a tie for 51st after posting an opening-round 75. The Aztec junior rebounded from two consecutive double-bogeys with a pair of pars sandwiched around a birdie over her final three holes. The SDSU starting lineup was also represented by senior Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.), who landed in a tie for 85th after shooting a 7-over 79, highlighted by a trio of birdies.
Miami (Fla.) shot a collective 12-under 276 to grab a five-shot lead over UCLA (-7) in the team standings, while Arizona State (-5), SMU (-4) and Mississippi State (-4) rounded out the top five.
Second-round action continues at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Monday when the Aztecs tee off on hole No. 1 with Denver and Iowa State, starting at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT).
