April 24, 2003
BEND, Ore. - Snow resulted in a four-hour delay and change of venue for the first round of the Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship and likely did not help San Diego State's cause. Playing on an unfamiliar course at the Awbrey Glen Golf Club in Bend, Ore., after playing its practice round at original site Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort, the Aztecs shot a 33-over total of 321 and stand in fifth place after the first 18 holes of the conference championship. UNLV holds the first-round lead at 305, four shots in front of second-place Colorado State. BYU is third at 314 while New Mexico (316), the highest-ranked team in the conference, is five shots ahead of SDSU in fourth place. Wyoming is sixth at 335. Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) did her best to overcome the day's adversity, shooting a 4-over round of 76 that is tied for third place with 2002 MWC champion Lynette Duran of Colorado State and Hwanhee Lee of UNLV. The trio is three shots back of first-round leader Sunny Oh of UNLV (73), who has a one-shot advantage over second-place Katrina Leckovic of New Mexico (74). Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) shares 12th place after a first-round 79. Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) shot 82 and is tied for 21st place, while senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) is another stroke back at 83 and shares 23rd. Freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) shot 87 and is 29th. The MWC Championship shifts back to its scheduled site at the Sunriver Resort's Meadows Course tomorrow, with play beginning at 10 a.m. 2003 Mountain West Conference Championship First Round Played At Awbrey Glen Golf Club, Bend, Ore.
