April 22, 2004
SUNRIVER, Ore. - San Diego State recorded a solid 301 in the first day of the MWC Tournament in Sunriver, Ore. but sits in fifth place with two rounds remaining. The Aztecs are 12 strokes off the pace set by UNLV, who opened with a five-over 289. SDSU fell victim to a tough 18th hole where the team combined to go four-over par. Freshman Jenna Wilson led SDSU in the first day of play with a two-over-par 73 and sits in seventh place. The six conference foes will return to action on Friday with tee times beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Wilson's round was a consistent one with one birdie and three bogeys on the day. However, the freshman was one of the Aztecs to finish on a sour note as she posted a five on the par-four final hole of day.
Heather MacRae shot three-over 74. The junior had three bogeys and was three-over after 12 holes, but used two birdies to get back down to one-over heading to the 18th where she finished with a double-bogey.
Senior Shayna Miyajima fired a six-over 77, but will remember two holes that kept her out of the top scores of the day. Miyajima posted eight pars on the front nine but also had a double-bogey six on the par four third hole. Then after two bogey's, the senior birdied No. 15 to get back to three-over. However, she followed with a triple-bogey seven on No. 16 to get to where she finished the day.
Sophomore Toni Lutz, playing in only her second varsity tournament of the season, also posted a solid six-over 77. Lutz played a steady round posting 12 pars and six bogeys.
Senior Sandy Kim shot 82 to finish the Aztec scoring. It was the third competitive round of the spring for Kim who is coming off a back injury in the fall.
