SDSU Falls To Fifth In Second Round of MWC Championships

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The San Diego State women's golf team dropped one spot from fourth to fifth after the second round of the Mountain West Conference Championships Friday in St. George, Utah at the par-72, 6,299-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. The Aztecs improved their team score by 8 strokes, shooting a 14-over 302 on Friday for a two-round score of 612 (+36).

Maki Kamimura (West Covina, Calif.) had the best round for the Aztecs, jumping all the way to eighth place after starting the day in 20th on the individual leaderboard. Kamimura carded a 72 (E), six strokes better than her first round score. She currently sits in a three-way tie for eighth with a two-day total of 6-over 150.

Kamimura also surpassed fellow freshman Alana Erlandson (Palm Desert, Calif.) on the leaderboard. Erlandson, who led SDSU after round one, carded a 4-over 76 in the second round to move into a tie for 11th.

Senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) finished the day one stroke better than her first-round score with a 76 (+4), to post a two-day total of 9-over 153 and is tied for 16th. Junior Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) improved her score as well, shooting two strokes better and carded a 6-over 78 in round two. Oliver's two-day total is 158 (+14). Sophomore Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) sits in 33rd with a current score of 26-over 170.

SDSU is six strokes out of fourth place and 18 strokes behind leader No. 12 UNLV. The Rebels currently hold a four-stroke lead over second place New Mexico, who leapfrogged BYU in day two.

Catherine Matranga of TCU now holds the overall lead with a two-day score of 144 (E). Mikaela Backstedt and Py Bengtsson of New Mexico follow Matranga. Backstedt is right behind Matranga in second place with a 1-over 145, while Bengtsson is in third place with a 4-over 148.

 

 

The Aztecs will finish up the MWC Championships Saturday morning with the third and final round starting at 10 a.m. (MDT).
