Women's Golf Earns Share Of Seventh Place At Utah Dixie Classic
April 8, 2003
ST. GEORGE, Utah - The San Diego State women's golf team completed a successful spring regular season today by claiming a share of seventh place at the 22-team, 120-golfer Utah Dixie Classic. The Aztecs, who entered the day 31-over-par after the first 27 holes, finished the final 27 at 35-over for a total of 930 (+66) that claims a fourth straight top-seven finish for the spring. UNLV, the top-rated team in the field at No. 33 Golfweek/No. 37 Golfstat, came from 14 shots back midway through the second round to take the team title by firing a tourney-best final round of 292. At 42-over 906, the Rebels claimed a three-shot win over second-place No. 43/50 San Francisco, yesterday's clubhouse leader. At No. 24 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin West region standings and fighting to improve its resume for a possible NCAA Regionals berth, SDSU was one of 20 West teams participating in the BYU-hosted event. The Aztecs picked up key head-to-head victories over higher-ranked regional teams No. 14 BYU (14th, 942), No. 17 Colorado State (13th, 938), No. 18 UC Irvine (T-10th, 934) and No. 19 Washington State (T-10th, 934). The result could have been even better for the Aztecs, as they finished just four strokes out of fourth place (Colorado, 926). Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) began the day by putting the finishing touches on her career-best, second-round score of 71. She then shot a final-round 75 to move into a share of sixth place for the third straight tournament at 8-over 224. In recording the Aztecs' low individual score, Kim, who has finished among the top 26 in each of her last seven events, ended up six shots behind medalist Jordan Auten of San Francisco (218, +2).
Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) was kept out of the top 20 for the first time in the spring with a 42nd-place finish. Miyajima, the reigning MWC Women's Golfer of the Month, followed her first-round 80 by shooting 77-79 for a 20-over total of 236. Despite the disappointing result, Miyajima has finished among the top 50 in all eight events this season.
Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS), who began the day in a tie for 24th place, shot a final-round 82 and slipped into a tie for 54th at 238. Freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) shot a career-best 76 in the final round and tied for 62nd at 241 along with senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS), who followed a pair of 78s with a final-round 85. With its regular season complete, San Diego State will begin preparing for the April 24-26 Mountain West Conference Championship held at the Meadows Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore.
