March 23, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - A final-round 302 earned the San Diego State women's golf team its third straight strong showing to begin the spring season, a fourth-place result at the Mountain View Collegiate. The Aztecs' consistent play over the 54-hole event - the Aztecs scored 305-304-302 for a final total of 911 - gives SDSU its third straight top-four finish to start 2003 after only one such result in the fall. SDSU's best 54-hole score of the season finished 21 shots back of team champion International Pacific College (890, +26), which shot the low round of the day with a 293 to leapfrog both second-round leader Kansas State (3rd place, 894) and Iowa State (2nd place, 892). The Aztec lineup came through with three individuals among the top 13. Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) led the way with a tie for sixth at 6-over 222, the best 54-hole score of her collegiate score by one shot. Kim followed her career-low round of 71 in yesterday's second round with a final-round 72, giving her two scores of par or better in a tournament for the first time. Kim, who has finished at least 26th in her last six events, ended up five shots back of individual medalist Christine Boucher of Kansas State (217, +1) Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) matched the third-best round of the day with a career-best 1-under 71 that was three shots clear of her previous personal-best 74. Hoene finished in a tie for ninth at 7-over 223 for her second top 10 this season.
Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS), the first-round leader after shooting the third 71 of her collegiate career, finished 76-77 to tie for 13th at 8-over 224. Miyajima, who was coming off back-to-back second-place results in the first two events of the spring, still picked up her fourth top-20 of the year. Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) shared 53rd place at 245, while redshirt freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) finished in a 59th-place tie at 249.
SDSU enjoys two weeks off before returning to action at the April 7-8 BYU Invitational. Final scores with relation to par Mar. 23 at the Mountain View Collegiate, played at the par-72, 5,984-yard Mountain View Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.
