Aztecs Hold Fourth-Place Standing At Mountain View Collegiate
March 22, 2003
The San Diego State women's golf team holds fourth place after the first two rounds of the Mountain View Collegiate, played at the par-72, 5,984-yard Mountain View Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz. The Aztecs shot 305-304, their fourth- and fifth-straight rounds of 308 or better, for a 36-hole total of 609. Kansas State holds the 36-hole lead at 13-over 589, three shots better than second-place Iowa State (592) and eight shots clear of International Pacific (597). The Aztecs' hold on fourth is somewhat tenuous, as co-host Colorado and Iowa are tied for fifth one shot below SDSU at 610 and Boise State is seventh at 613. Should they hold on to their position following tomorrow's final round, the Aztecs would have their third straight finish of fourth or better. Junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) held the first-round lead after shooting the third 71 of her collegiate career. Miyajima followed with a second-round 76 to drop into a third-place tie at 147, but she is just one shot back of co-leaders Alana Condon of Nevada and Louise Kenney of Iowa State (146) in her quest for the first individual title of her career. She is coming off back-to-back second-place results in the first two events of the spring. The Aztecs had all four counted scores at 80 or below and boast three players among the top 22 individuals. Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) recovered from a first-round 79 with her best collegiate score, a 1-under 71, in the second round. Kim, who has finished no worse than 26th in her last five events, shares 16th place at 150, just four shots out of first.
Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) also remains in the hunt with a 152 total that is tied for 21st, just six shots back of the leaders. She shot rounds of 75 and 77 on the day. Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) shot a first-round 80, but when she followed up with an 83, redshirt freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) recorded a second-round 80 for the fourth score after she had shot an 85 in the first round. Riley is tied for 52nd at 163 and Lutz shares 54th at 165.
The third and final round of the Mountain View Collegiate begins tomorrow with an 8:00 a.m. MST shotgun start. First- and second-round scores with relation to par Mar. 22 at the Mountain View Collegiate, played at the par-72, 5,984-yard Mountain View Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.
