Aztecs Match Best Result Of Season, Take Second At Duck Invitational
March 11, 2003
JUNCTION CITY, Ore. - The San Diego State women's golf team shot a final-round 306 and held off Missouri to claim its best 54-hole tournament result of the year with a second-place finish at the Oregon Duck Invitational. In the final round, all five Aztecs scored in the 70s for the first time this season as the Nos. 3-5 golfers claimed SDSU's low three scores. Washington State, No. 74 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, ran away with the team title by 18 shots over SDSU with a 32-over total of 896. But the Aztecs (308-300-306-914) defeated five higher-ranked teams, including No. 42 Missouri (916), in matching a second-place finish at the 36-hole Matador Fall Classic for the team's best result of the year. Wazzou's Kim Welch broke par all three days and also ran away with the individual title at 7-under 209. But 14 shots back in second place for her second straight event was SDSU junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS), who matched her best career result. Miyajima, who tied for second at SDSU's spring-opening Lady Aztec Invitational, finished alone in second this time despite a final-round 78 that left her at 7-over 223. She recorded her third second-place finish this season and has now averaged 74.4 strokes for her first five rounds, more than three strokes better than her fall average of 77.6. Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) joined Miyajima in the top 10 in a sixth-place tie at 228. Kim shot bookend 78s around a second-round 72 to claim her second top-10 of the year and seventh of her career.
However, it was Nos. 3-5 that carried the Aztecs on this day. Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) was the low Aztec in the third round with a 75. Hoene ended up in a 29th-place tie at 238. Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) shot in the 70s for the third straight day with a final-round 76 that moved her into the top 20 in a tie for 18th. And redshirt freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) registered SDSU's third score today with a 77 that surpassed a first-round 78 for the best 18 holes of her brief collegiate career.
"I'm very pleased with the result," coach Felicia Brown said. "You saw who shot low for us - they really played well." SDSU resumes its spring schedule March 22-23 in Tucson, Ariz., at the Mountain View Classic. Final scores with relation to par Mar. 11 at the Oregon Duck Invitational, played at the par-72, 5,982-yard Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore.
