Tourney-Low Round Propels Texas Tech to Lady Aztec Championship
Feb. 18, 2003
LAKE SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Tournament-low performances on the second and final day sent the Texas Tech women's golf team to the championship of the 2003 Lady Aztec Invitational at Lake San Marcos Country Club. Propelled by the best individual round of the event - a 3-under 69 by junior Jackie Ey - the Red Raiders leaped from third place after 18 holes to the title with a tourney-best second-round 302. At last year's Lady Aztec, the course was set up almost 200 yards longer as a par 73 and scores soared as Colorado State won with a 626 total. However, Texas Tech found this year's par 72, 5,885-yard course setup to its liking in round two as all five Red Raiders shot under 80 to polish off a 609 final total. Despite the individual medalist performance of Jennifer Bawanan, Kansas relinquished its first-round lead and took second place at 613, four shots behind Texas Tech. Host San Diego State placed three players among the top 16 scores and tied for third at 620 with CSU Northridge. Colorado State, the highest-ranked team in the field coming in at No. 60 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, placed fifth at 622. Bawanan followed up the only sub-par round yesterday (71) with a final-round 77 to eke out a one-shot win at 148. San Diego State junior Shayna Miyajima (Wailuku, Hawaii/Baldwin HS) could not duplicate her four-birdie round of the day before in shooting a second-round 77 and tying with Sacramento State's Courtney Cotter for second at 149. Colorado State's Dawna Virdell took fourth at 141, while Ey, whose 69 was five shots lower than the second-best score today and 14 strokes better than her first-round 83, was among four golfers tied for fifth.
For the host Aztecs, Miyajima's second-place tie matched SDSU's and her own best individual finish of the year. Senior Jennifer Hoene (Acampo, Calif./St. Mary's HS) fired a 78 for the final 18 and tied for 13th at 155. Junior Sandy Kim (West Linn, Ore./West Linn HS) claimed the Aztecs' other top-20 finish by sharing 16th place at 156.
Senior Claire Riley (San Diego, Calif./Univ. of San Diego HS) tied for 29th with a total of 161, while redshirt freshman Toni Lutz (Anaheim, Calif./Valley Christian HS) dropped three shots off her first-round score with an 81 to finish at 165 in 45th place. Sophomore Cameron MacFarland (Issaquah, Wash./Liberty HS), playing in the first tournament of her collegiate career as an individual, tied for 63rd at 172. The San Diego State women's golf team resumes its spring schedule at the March 10-11 Oregon Duck Invitational.
