Aztec Women's Golf Second After Day Two Of The Hurricane Invite
Feb. 15, 2010
The San Diego State women's golf team shaved 10 strokes off its first round score to move into second place in the overall standings through 36 holes Monday at the Hurricane Invitational at the par-72, 6,199-yard Don Shula's Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla. The Aztecs finished with their fifth sub-300 round of the season, carding a 293 to jump one spot in the team standings with a 20-over 596, trailing defending tournament champion No. 54 Georgia State by four strokes heading into Tuesday's final round.
SDSU freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) remains in first place on the individual leaderboard as the only golfer under par through two rounds. She fired a 2-over 74, including three birdies, to own a one-stroke lead over Georgia State's Cathrine Madsen with a 1-under 143. Should Wong hold on, it would be her second tournament title of the season after claiming medalist honors at the Price's Give `Em Five Invite in Las Cruces, N.M., last October.
Wong was actually the only Aztec golfer to not improve on her day one score, as each of the team's four other players logged rounds in the 70s. True freshman Gina Clark (Palm Desert, Calif.) finished with the first even-par round of her SDSU career with a 72 to move from 25th place into a tie for 12th at 4-over 148. SDSU sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) made the biggest improvement from Sunday, also tallying a 72 to go from 44th all the way to a tie for 15th at 6-over 150.
Aztec juniors Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.), who each started the event with a first-round 80, carded a 75 and 78 respectively to tie for 44th and 60th place in the 90-golfer field.
The Hurricane Invitational concludes Tuesday with the third round slated to begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET.
