SDSU's Christine Wong First After 18 Holes At Hurricane Invite
Feb. 14, 2010
MIAMI LAKES, Fla. -
San Diego State freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) started the 2010 spring schedule just where she left off to end 2009, as she has a three-stroke lead at the 17-team Hurricane Invitational at Don Shula's Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla. Wong was the only golfer in the 90-player field to finish Sunday's first round under par, firing a 3-under 69 on the par-72, 6,210-yard course. As a team, the Aztecs are currently in third place at 15-over 303, trailing second place No. 57 Coastal Carolina (296) and No. 54 Georgia State (292).
Wong, who entered the 54-hole tournament ranked 67th nationally by Golfstat.com, had 13 pars and four birdies and finished the first nine holes with a 33. It is her fifth sub-70 round this season and she leads a group of four other golfers at the Hurricane Invite by three strokes, as each tied for second at even-par 72.
Joining Wong in the top 25 is fellow freshman Gina Clark (Palm Desert, Calif.), who logged the field's only eagle on the day to post a 4-over 76, tying for 25th place overall. SDSU sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) is tied for 44th with a 78, while juniors Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) and Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) each carded a first-round 8-over 80.
The Hurricane Invitational continues Monday with the second round slated to begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. ET.
