SDSU Women's Golf Takes Ninth In First Spring Event

Battling high winds on Tuesday morning, the San Diego State women's golf team settled for a ninth-place finish at the 16-team Arizona Wildcat Invitational at the par-72, 6,321-yard The Golf Club at Vistoso. The Aztecs were in seventh place through 36 holes, but fell back two spots after a final-round 324 to end the two-day event, which was the squad's spring opener, at 59-over 923.
SDSU was led by senior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.), who moved from 18th into 13th place despite carding her biggest score of the tournament with a 5-over 77. Arcala had one bogey, two double bogeys and 15 pars to end up at 8-over 224, tying Arizona's Alejandra Llaneza.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) was the Aztecs' second highest finisher, posting a 77 en route to an 11-over 227 to tie for 20th place.
Clark's classmate, Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), entered the final 18 tied with Arcala for 18th place, but was never able to find her swing, carding three double bogeys as well as three bogeys on her final four holes for a 12-over 84 to tie for 34th place with a 231.
Sophomore Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) was two strokes behind Wong with a 17-over 233, including a final-round 80, to tie for 40th. Senior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) fired her second consecutive 83 to tie for 59th and junior Malin Enarsson (Gotheburg, Sweden) came in 70th with a 28-over 244.
Host Arizona maintained its day one lead and won by 11 strokes over Cal with an 11-over 875, while Wildcat Isabelle Boineau also claimed medalist honors by two strokes with a 4-under 212, including a final-round 73.
San Diego State will return to Southern California for its next tournament, Feb. 14-15, at the Gold Rush at the Yorba Linda Country Club in Yorba Linda, Calif.
