No. 8 SDSU Lightweights to Wrap Up Season at IRA Regatta This Weekend
The nationally eighth-ranked San Diego State lightweight boat heads to Camden, N.J., to compete in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championships on June 4 on the shores of Cooper River.

The IRAs are the collegiate national championships for all men's rowing events and for women's lightweight rowers. The NCAA sponsors women's rowing as a championship sport, but only for the varsity eight, junior varsity eight and varsity four boats.

The IRAs will feature many of the top lightweight boats in the country including nine of the top 12 boats in the latest USRowing Women's Lightweight Eight Collegiate Coaches Poll. Besides No. 8 SDSU, Wisconsin (1), Princeton (2), Radcliffe (3), Stanford (4), Georgetown (5), Ohio State (7), Central Florida (10) and Marist (12) will be in attendance.

Rewind: Pacific Coast/Pac-10 Rowing Champs
The SDSU lightweight eight boat took second at the Pacific Coast Championships on the shores of Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., on May 14. The lightweights placed second with a time of 7 minutes, 14.7 seconds behind fourth-ranked Stanford (7:02.9). No. 10 Loyola Marymount (7:19.8) and 14th-ranked California (7:24.9) rounded out the four-team race.

At the Pac-10 Rowing Championships the following day, the varsity four took seventh with a time of 7:46.9, well ahead of eighth-place Stanford (8:02.1).

The Aztecs finished ninth in both the second varsity eight and the novice eight, respectively. The second varsity eight's time of 7:00.5 was four seconds faster than Loyola Marymount (7:04.7) and almost six seconds better than UC Davis (7:06.3). The novice eight boat was eighth (7:14.9), easily outdistancing Sonoma State (7:29.9) and Oregon (7:31.9).

The varsity eight also competed at the Championships, placing 13th with a time of 7:00.9.

A Look Back: 2004 IRA Regatta
The SDSU lightweight eight boat took fourth in petite final on June 5, 2004, to finish 10th overall in the IRA Regatta. It was the first showing at the IRA championships for an Aztec women's crew boat since the 2000 lightweight boat placed fifth overall.

The lightweights had identical fifth-place showings in the trial heat and the afternoon's repechage heat the day before.
