SDSU's Brittany McMahon Named CRCA Second-Team All-Region
May 20, 2005 SAN DIEGO - Senior Brittany McMahon (Fortuna HS/Fortuna, Calif.) has been named second-team all-region by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) on Friday. The CRCA awards are given annually to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the competitive spring season. "Brittany is an outstanding student-athlete," said head coach Jennifer Zebroski. "Her strong efforts on both the water and the erg helped us to a strong season." McMahon became the first Aztec to be recognized by the CRCA since 2002, when Caroline Fiegen and current SDSU assistant coach Alicia Stuebner were selected to the second team. McMahon rowed on the winning varsity eight boat at the San Diego Crew Classic (Cal Cup) on April 3, the team's first Cal Cup victory since 1998. She also helped the varsity boat to a fifth-place finish of 50 boats at the prestigious Head of Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., last October. Earlier this month, McMahon was invited to the 2005 USRowing women's pre-elite selection camp in Seattle, Wash., where she is one of 17 women who will compete for spots on the Under-23 National Team that will race at the 2005 Under-23 World Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from July 21-24. The nomination criteria for the all-region list includes meeting eligibility rules as defined by the athletes' institution and participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the varsity boat. The all-America first and second teams will be selected by the regional chairpersons from the all-region list. All-America honors will be announced at a date to be determined.
