SDSU Crew Competes in WIRA Championships
* The San Diego State women's crew team competes at the WIRA (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association) Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
* SDSU will send five boats: varsity eight, junior varsity eight, lightweight eight, novice eight and novice four. The top two boats in each heat advance to the grand final, the next two boats to the petite final and the next two (or fewer if applicable) to the third final.
* The lightweight eight boat is ranked No. 12 in this week's USRowing poll.
* "I am looking forward to our conference championships this weekend," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "We have been focusing on the WIRA championships since the beginning of the spring season and it is finally upon us."
Opielowski Looks to Go Out with a Bang
* Senior Amy Opielowski is rowing in her final WIRA Championships this weekend. "Amy is a great athlete and is extremely dedicated to her training, team and individual growth," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "I will miss Amy's presence and intensity on the team next year."
* Opielowski will join Bekah Beltz, Alicia Chudy, Stella Conger, Amanda Corvera and Stephanie Snaman as seniors who will shortly wrap up their SDSU rowing careers.
Recapping the Miller Cup Regatta
* The San Diego State women's crew team had four boats compete at Saturday's Miller Cup in Marina Del Rey, Calif. The novice eight boat fell just short of UCLA in the grand final, 6:48.3-6:51.8. The junior varsity eight also placed second to the Bruins in the grand final, 6:42.2 to 6:56.3, but did outpace Loyola Marymount (6:58.7). The novice four boat, racing as a varsity boat, won the petite final to finish fourth overall. The varsity eight boat was second in their heat but had to scratch out of the petite final due to injury. All races were 1,750 meters long.
Looking to the Rest of the Spring
* The Aztecs head back to Sacramento, Calif., for the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships May 15 and the Pac-10 Championships on May 16. The NCAA Championships take place from May 28-30 in Sacramento and the IRA Championships are June 3-5 in Camden, N.J.
