SDSU Rowers Complete Day One of San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team completed the first day of competition at the 34th Annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday. The Aztecs had four boats compete in the first day of the prestigious regatta, which is being held at Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay.

SDSU had its best showing in the women's open eight race, taking second in the heat and fourth of 20 boats overall. The Aztecs rowed to a time of 8 minutes, 6.15 seconds, almost six seconds ahead of second-place UC Irvine Alumnae (8:12.07).

San Diego State took fourth in two other races and sixth in another.

In the junior varsity second preliminary heat race, SDSU nipped Clemson at the line to capture fourth place by a mere 0.72 seconds (7:16.21-7:16.67). UCLA (7:02.80), Stanford (7:04.59) and Washington State (7:04.93) were first, second and third, respectively.

The Aztecs took fourth in the novice eight race with a time of 8:02.45, over 10 seconds ahead of fifth-place West Virginia (8:13.09), and finished sixth (7:10.87) in the Jessop-Whittier Cup Varsity Eight race, which was won by Stanford (6:39.26).

San Diego State wraps up the San Diego Crew Classic tomorrow with the petite and grand finals. Competition gets underway at 7:30 a.m.
