Aztec Rowers Set for 34th Annual San Diego Crew Classic

March 30, 2007

SAN DIEGO - After a two-week break from competition, the San Diego State rowing team returns to action this weekend when it competes in the 34th annual San Diego Crew Classic, March 31-April 1, at Crown Point Shores on Mission Bay. The Aztecs will have four crews participating in the prestigious two-day regatta, which commences Saturday at 7:30 a.m.

The SDSU varsity boat will compete for the prestigious Jessop-Whittier Cup for the second consecutive year after winning the Cal Cup at the 2005 Crew Classic. The scarlet and black will challenge 10 other schools, including Cal, Stanford, Miami, USC, UCLA and rival Loyola Marymount. The Aztecs will row in heat "A" of the Jessop-Whittier Cup on Saturday, beginning at 8:40 a.m.

SDSU is also slated to race in the women's junior varsity (heat "B" - 10 a.m.), women's collegiate novice (heat "C" - 11:10 a.m.) and women's open (heat "C" - 1:30 p.m.).

Last year, the women's open boat finished fourth in the grand final to lead the Aztecs. SDSU was also third in the petite final of the junior varsity race, fifth in the petite final of the novice race and fifth in the Jessop-Whittier Cup grand final.

The San Diego Crew Classic will continue on Sunday with the Petite and Grand Final races. For more information on the Classic, please visit http://www.crewclassic.org/.
