Meet the Aztec Rowing Team: Team Captain Edition
Feb. 13, 2013
SAN DIEGO - Meet the Aztecs! This spring we will be taking a look at the Aztec Rowing season from the student-athlete's perspective. This week's student-athlete's perspective was written by team captains Vivianna Smith and Chelsee Brewster.
SDSU Women's Rowing, Back and Hungry For A Banner
There are less than two weeks that remain until the kickoff of our 2013 spring season, with our scrimmage between Orange Coast College (OCC) and our backyard rivals, University of San Diego and UC San Diego. As captains, we are extremely pleased with the overall team morale and the collaborative effort from our rowers this year. We returned to the water in January, focused and aware of goals for the season. Each season we hope to improve from the previous, but out of our years on this team, we know this squad is hungrier than any team we have ever been on. We are aware of the challenges that lie ahead of us, but know that with greater practice comes greater confidence.
Our ultimate goal is to get a top place finish at our championship race in May for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA). Each day we see the banners that hang in our ERG room of previous, top-place finishers from SDSU and we are reminded of our goal. Before we graduate we want our name, as well as the other athletes on this squad, on that wall of WIRA banners. For now, our short-term goal is OCC, USD, and UCSD. We believe the scrimmage will be our first test to gauge our progress and help us moving forward towards WIRA.
