The Aztec Novice 8+ 'A' boat finished fifth of 22 entries at the Newport Rowing Festival on Sunday.

Newport, Calif. - The San Diego State crew team had four of its six entries place in the upper half of their respective divisions at the Newport Autumn rowing Festival held Sunday morning in Newport Beach. Calif. The races covered 2.8 miles (4,500 meters) through Newport Harbor.

The Aztecs' best result came in the Frosh/Novice 8+ races where the SDSU A boat captured fifth of 22 entries that competed on the 4,400 yard (2.7 miles) course. In that same race, the Aztecs B boat captured ninth place in 22:06. The event was won by the UCLA `A' boat with a time of 18:53.

In the Women's Open 8+ category, San Diego State's "B" and "A" boats finished 12th and 13th respectively in a field that included 28 entries. The Aztec `B' crew covered the course in 18:23 with the `A' boat just five second behind at 18:28. Finishing first in the race was the Oklahoma `A' boat with a time of 17:10.

San Diego State will close out its fall season by hosting its annual Alumni and Family Day next Saturday, Nov. 12, at 8:00 a.m. at mission Bay in San Diego.
