SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State women's crew team advanced three boats to petite finals at Sunday's Pac-10 Championships. The novice eight boat won its petite final, while the junior varsity eight placed fourth and the varsity eight was seventh. With the exception of the SDSU lightweight eight boat, today marked the end of the 2003-04 season for Aztec rowers. (The lightweights will compete at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships in Camden, N.J., from June 3-5.)

On Sunday, the novice eight boat placed fourth in its six-boat heat to advance to the petite final, where it won with a time of 7:20.8, outpacing Sacramento State (7:23.5), UC Davis (7:26.4), Santa Clara (7:41.0), Sonoma State (7:45.3) and Oregon (7:50.2).

"The novice eight had a strong race in the petite final," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "They have been strong and competitive and good racers all year and that showed itself today."

The Aztec junior varsity boat finished sixth in their heat and then was fourth in the petite final (7:38.1), trailing Stanford (7:13.0), Loyola Marymount (7:25.9) and UC Davis (7:26.3).

The varsity eight boat was fourth in its heat and placed seventh in the petite final with a time of 7:35.3. Oregon State won that race (7:02.8) and was followed by Loyola Marymount (7:04.1), Sacramento State (7:08.2), Gonzaga (7:10.2), UC Davis (7:15.2), UC Santa Barbara (7:27.2) and the Aztecs.

"A foot-stretcher broke before the final and I think that caught them a little off guard," Zebroski said. "In the race, they couldn't get in a groove and were not racing in unison, but more like individuals."
