SDSU Rowers Complete First Day of WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The second varsity and novice eight boats each advanced to the grand final to pace the San Diego State crew team on the first day of the WIRA Championships in Lake Natoma, Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday afternoon. The second varsity boat rowed to a time of 7 minutes, 20.1 seconds to finish third in its heat. Sacramento State won the heat with a time of 7:16.8, followed by UC Davis (7:17.9), SDSU, Pacific Lutheran (7:48.6), Santa Clara (7:55.2) and UC San Diego (8:05.7). The novice eight boat reached Sunday's grand final after winning its heat in a time of 7:11.3. The novice eights took first in the heat of seven boats. Three other boats - varsity eight (7:12.8), varsity four (7:45.5) and novice four (8:21.5) - qualified for the petite final in their preliminary heats. Later on in the day, both the varsity four (8:29.8) and novice four (8:46.0) boats won their respective petite final races. The WIRA Championships will continue on Sunday.
