SDSU's Second Novice Eight Boat Wins Bronze Medal at WIRA Championships

LAKE NATOMA, SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team wrapped up the WIRA Championships with a bronze medal by the Second Novice Eight boat Sunday morning on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Three other Aztec boats finished among the top five in their respective Grand Final race. SDSU's Second Novice Eight, which consisted of Laura Norton (cox), Melissa Carey (stroke), Courtney Caldwell (seven), Katie Rusch (six), Kelly West (five), Lindsay Butcher (four), Allison Nance (three), Lauren Lee (two) and Gabriela Reyes (bow), finished third in the Grand Final with a time of 7 minutes, 54.7 seconds, well ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara (8:15.9). "Overall I thought we had a good weekend," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "I was very proud of our Second Novice Eight winning a bronze medal. I was excited for them." The Aztec Second Varsity Eight and Novice Eight each took fourth in their event. The Second Varsity Eight rowed to a time of 7:12.3, while the Novice Eight (7:21.6) was edged by Humbolt State (7:21.3) for third place. In Varsity Eight action, SDSU took fifth with a time of 7:02.4, narrowly beating archrival Loyola Marymount (7:03.9). The Aztecs will be back in the water in two weeks, when they wrap up their season at the competitive Pac-10 Championships on May 13 in Lake Natoma.
