Three nationally-televised games and the first-ever Mountain West meetings with newcomers Fresno State and Nevada highlight the San Diego State women's basketball team's 2013 league schedule released Friday afternoon by the conference office.
The Aztecs will be a part of three of the league's five televised conference outings, which will all be shown on CBS Sports Network. SDSU's meetings at Colorado State in mid-January, at Fresno State in early February and at home against UNLV in mid-February will be carried live on either a Saturday or Sunday. The exact dates and times, as well as the Aztecs' non-conference televised games and complete schedule, will be released at a later date.
San Diego State officially begins defense of its Mountain West regular-season title on Jan. 9, 2013, at home against Fresno State. The two sides will be squaring off for the first time as members of the MW, but have faced each other 33 times previously with the most recent coming in 2002 (SDSU leads 23-10). Both the Aztecs and Bulldogs competed in the NCAA tournament a year ago after earning their league's automatic berth.
SDSU will then play consecutive road outings at Colorado State and at UNLV, before returning to Viejas Arena for back-to-back home games against Wyoming and Nevada. An away matchup at New Mexico on Jan. 26 precedes the Aztecs' first bye of the conference campaign on Jan. 30. The team completes the first round of league play against Air Force (Feb. 2) and at Boise State (Feb. 6).
Two of San Diego State's first three games of the second round will be on television as the Aztecs travel to Fresno State on Feb. 9 or 10, and UNLV comes to Southern California on Feb. 16 or 17. The squad follows that stretch with three road contests over its next four outings before finishing out the regular season for the second year in a row at home against Boise State on March 9.
The 2013 Mountain West championship will be held in Las Vegas, Nev., for the seventh-straight year and the 11th time overall on March 12-16 at the Thomas & Mack Center. The format of the tournament, however, will change for the fourth time in the last six seasons with a single first-round contest on Tuesday, followed by four quarterfinal outings on Thursday and two semifinals on Friday. The championship finale on Saturday has been moved to a 7 p.m. PT tip-off and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
