SAN DIEGO - Beth Burns, who has led the Aztec women's basketball program to three NCAA tournament berths in the last four years, has signed a new five-year contract, San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk announced Tuesday. The contract is effective immediately and runs through the 2016-17 campaign.
"We are excited to have coach Burns agree to this new contract to ensure that she will lead our women's basketball program for many years to come," Sterk said. "Beth's passion and desire to not only win championships, but to also develop quality student-athletes are second to none. Her record of success is well documented and I am confident that the team will continue to build momentum and annually compete on the national stage."
Burns is entering her eighth year of her second stint at San Diego State. In 2011-12, she led the Aztecs to both a Mountain West regular-season and tournament title and a trip to the NCAA championship, compiling a 25-7 overall record for the program's most victories since 1993-94. For her efforts, she was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year for the second time in the last four campaigns.
"I am extremely appreciative of the opportunity to continue to serve as the head basketball coach at SDSU," Burns said. "I truly appreciate the continued support shown by our University and athletic department leaders. I BELIEVE in the excellence of our academic programs, I BELIEVE in the commitment to success amongst my fellow coaches and I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN."
Since returning to The Mesa in 2004, Burns has taken the program to new heights, recording three, 20-plus win seasons in the last four years, claiming two regular-season and two conference tournament titles and advancing to the NCAAs on three occasions, including a trip to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2010.
In her first stint on Montezuma Mesa from 1989-97, Burns directed San Diego State to four 20-win campaigns and four NCAA tournament appearances. The Aztecs claimed two WAC conference championships and three regular-season titles in her eight-year tenure. Burns was named WAC Coach of the Year on three occasions and garnered district coach-of-the-year honors in 1995.
Burns' 20-year head coaching record stands at 349-244, including 268 victories at the helm of the Aztecs. The Chatham, N.J., native has coached SDSU student-athletes to five All-America selections, three conference player-of-the-year and league tournament MVP accolades and two defensive player-of-the-year honors. The Aztecs have had 18 first-team all-league selections and 16 all-academic picks during Burns' two stints.
San Diego State returns four starters for the upcoming 2012-13 campaign, including reigning Mountain West Player of the Year Courtney Clements and first-team all-league pick Chelsea Hopkins. Season tickets are on sale now through the Aztec ticket office at 619-283-SDSU.
