Burns Elected As Secretary Of WBCA Executive Committee
May 17, 2012
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State head coach Beth Burns has been elected to remain as the secretary of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Board of Directors' Executive Committee for the 2012-13 academic year, the WBCA announced on May 16.
Formerly a Division I at-large representative on the board of directors, Burns last year was appointed as secretary to fill the one year remaining on the term of University of Notre Dame associate head coach Carol Owens who became the Black Coaches and Administrators representative on the board.
As WBCA secretary, Burns keeps track of the board's documents and records, ensures accuracy of meeting minutes and keeps the board posted on meeting dates and times. She also would assume the duties of the WBCA president in the absence of the board president and vice president.
In 2010, she was reelected to what would have been a three-year term on the Board of Directors as a Division I at-large representative. In 2009, she finished the final year of Thorne's term when Thorne was named the organization's vice president. Burns is an active member of the WBCA, serving as a committee member in 2008-09 for the Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award, which that year was given to the late Kay Yow. She also has been a part of the voting panel for the WBCA/USA Today Coaches Top 25 national weekly poll.
The WBCA Board of Directors includes representatives from the high school, collegiate and professional levels. It develops policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the organization. The board also monitors the organization's financial health, programs and overall performance and provides the chief executive officer with the resources to meet the needs of those the organization serves.
Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.
