SAN DIEGO - Aztec women's basketball head coach Beth Burns was recognized last Friday at the Del Mar Country Club, as one of San Diego's 10 Cool Women of 2012 by the Girl Scouts. Since 2001, the group has honored 10 women each year for their professional accomplishments, community contributions and leadership.
Burns shared the award with nine other women including Sahra Abdi (humanitarian), Joan Embery (wildlife and environmental advocate), Judith Fox (artist, author and businesswoman), Jeanne Jones (author and philanthropist), Gail Naughton (scientist and entrepreneur), Tina Nova (scientist and entrepreneur), Susan Polis Schutz (filmmaker, poet and businesswoman), Karin Winner (journalist and businesswoman) and Su-Mei Yu (chef and author).
Burns, who just completed the eighth year of her second stint at SDSU, has also previously been honored in 2007-08 as a Girl Scouts "Cool Person of the Year".
SDSU women's basketball and the Girl Scouts San Diego have an on-going relationship. Each year, the team hosts an annual Girl Scouts Day/Night at a home game at Viejas Arena. Burns has also been a speaker at several of the organization's events and the team volunteers at the Girl Scouts New Day 5K race every year.
