Aztec Basketball Announces Team Award-Winners At Year-End Banquet
March 23, 2006
SAN DIEGO - Senior Michelle Strawberry (Corona, Calif.) was named team MVP and sophomore Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) picked up two awards at the San Diego State women's basketball team's year-end banquet Wednesday night at Cox Arena.
Strawberry garnered MVP honors after leading the team in scoring (13.5 ppg.) and ranking second in rebounding (5.5 rpg.). The honorable mention all-conference pick scored in double-figures in 20 of 27 outings, including at the MWC tournament, where she reached the 20-point mark for the sixth time in 2005-06. Strawberry was one of two Aztecs to play and start in all 27 games and finished her career ranked third in school history in three-pointers with 83.
Demus was named SDSU's most improved and best defensive player after seeing action in 27 contests in her first season on The Mesa. The forward averaged 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and led the team in offensive rebounds (54) and ranked second in minutes (30.2/g), blocks (24) and steals (34).
Redshirt sophomore Courtney Fritz (Newberg, Ore.) received the coaches' award, which was renamed after former SDSU standout (1991-94) and current Aztec broadcaster Tammy Blackburn. Fritz returned to the court in 2005-06 after a 13-month absence and two ACL surgeries, appearing in seven contests before reinjuring the same knee at New Mexico in late January. A MWC honorable mention pick as a freshman in 2003-04, Fritz ended her career ranked in the top 10 in school history for both three-pointers made and attempted.
Junior center Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii) received special recognition at the banquet for finishing as the Mountain West Conference's leader in blocked shots. Johnson recorded 38 in her first campaign in the Scarlet and Black, averaging 1.41 per outing. Her 23 blocks in conference play were five more than her nearest rival.
Three Aztecs were also honored for their work in the classroom, as sophomore Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas) and freshmen Audrey Green (San Marcos, Calif.) and Tamika Lipford (Oceanside, Calif.) received scholar-athlete awards for having cumulative grade-point averages of over 3.0 at SDSU.
