Aztec Basketball's Jené Morris Named State Farm WBCA All-Region Honoree

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior guard Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) has been named one of 52 regional finalists for the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Tuesday. Morris was among just four players selected in Region 7, which includes teams in the Mountain West, Big Sky and Western Athletic Conferences. Morris was named the 2009 MWC Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team all-league selection. She leads the Aztecs in points with 15.5 a contest to rank fourth in the Mountain West. She also is first in the league in steals in both overall (3.25/g) and conference-only (2.94/g) outings, ranking seventh nationally. Morris has three or more steals in 18 of her 28 games, including a league-high eight on two occasions, which are the most by an Aztec since 2002. Morris has 183 takeaways in her short two-year stay on The Mesa, including 91 as a junior. Morris earned a spot on last week's MWC championship all-tournament team for the second straight year after scoring 27 points in the semifinals vs. UNLV and 22 points in the final against Utah. She has earned MWC player-of-the-week honors four times in 2008-09 and was MVP of the San Diego Surf `N Slam after pouring in 24 points and eight steals in the upset of No. 4 Texas. Morris has led the squad in scoring 15 times, tallying double-figures in 22 games, including 34 vs. Iowa State and 31 at Colorado State. The State Farm Coaches' All-America Team selection committee will review all 52 regional candidates and cut the list to 40 finalists on March 25. The 40 finalists will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team. Morris and the Aztecs will face DePaul in the first round of the NCAA tournament this Saturday at Cox Arena beginning at 5 p.m. PT, as SDSU makes its first postseason appearance since 1997.
