Head coach Beth Burns spoke to the media Monday after the NCAA selection show.
March 15, 2010
On Playing Texas:
"We're as excited as we can be. It's right down the road from the home of the Final Four in San Antonio and there are a lot of exciting things about that. It's rare that you have an opportunity to have familiarity of your opponent. The irony is that Texas probably took our program to another level when we beat them a year ago. Now we get to see (how we match up) as a year's time has passed and (we play on) their home floor."
If Seeds Matter in the Tournaments:
"Seedings do matter in tournaments, especially in women's tournaments when you can host and play on your home floor. I think relative to our season that's about where I thought we'd fall. Right now, seedings don't matter. Right now, Texas matters and West Virginia and Lamar matter and the teams that are in front of you matter. We will do everything that we can to prepare and get ready to go and have a great showing in Austin."
On Preparing the Team for the Game:
"For them, this is a once in lifetime, so enjoy it. Then starting Tuesday at 1 p.m., we'll hit the practice floor and we'll focus all about Aztecs and Longhorns. We'll be ready to play."
On the Mountain West Conference Tournament:
"Sometimes, I still can't believe we won. When I wear my (championship) t-shirt, it reminds of that incredible and blessed feeling. I'm excited."
On Playing Texas:
"They're a great team. I'm ready for it. It's going to be a great match. We played them last year, and this year it's going to be fun. It's another déjà vu."
On Playing in Austin:
"For us it's another big opportunity to go somewhere else and play a good team. There's nothing else we can do other than play a great team and see how it goes."
Thoughts on the NCAA Tournament:
"I just can't be more excited for our team, our coaching staff and all of our fans. It means a lot to be here two years in a row when a few years ago they weren't even close to it. Words can't express how excited we are."
On the Experience as a Senior:
"Quenese (Davis), Jené (Morris) and I went to the (Mountain West) Conference tournament and the NCAA tournament last year. This year, we won the conference tournament and that was one of the things we had yet to accomplish. To get the automatic bid and just to know that your name will be called is, like I said before, unexplainable."
On Playing Texas:
"It's the NCAA tournament so every game is going to be tough. We are kind of familiar with some of their players that are still on the team this year, but they have new faces and we have new faces. Our coaching staff will do their job and we'll watch film. We're confident, but we also know that we have to play well in order to advance."
On playing Texas:
"We're excited. We played at home last year for the NCAA tournament and this year we get to travel, so we're starting to get the next step of the NCAA tournament and the experience that comes with it."
On the Momentum of Beating Texas Last Season:
"I wouldn't necessarily say momentum. They're a different team and we're definitely a different team. I'm the sure the coaches are upstairs right now looking at film and preparing for practice this week. We're going to start tomorrow and get ready for Sunday."
On the Momentum from the Mountain West Conference Tournament:
"I think the momentum started a couple of games before the tournament. We started to find our flow as a team. Our defensive presence has been great. We've been holding teams under 59 points which has been our goal all season, and everyone has been contributing offensively. If we keep working together and stay balanced, we're going to have a great game."
On winning an NCAA tournament game last year:
"That gets the jitters out from being in the big NCAA March Madness. This year, we have hopes to making it to the Sweet 16, while last year, we were happy to be in it. Now we have higher hopes. We just have to keep working hard and stay confident with ourselves. We're going to be on the road and all that we are going to have is each other. We are going to have to work as a team and hope we get some wins."
