Aztec Basketball's Davis, Demus Garner All-Conference Honors

March 5, 2007

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman guard Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior forward Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) both earned postseason honors from the Mountain West Conference for their play this season, the league office announced Monday. Davis was a third-team selection, becoming the first Aztec named to one of the MWC's three teams in the last three years, while Demus picked up her first career honorable mention honor.

Davis leads the MWC in assists per game both overall (5.33) and in league-only (5.25) outings, ranking 23rd nationally and first among freshmen. She is also fourth in the conference in steals (1.96/g) and is 15th in free-throw percentage. Davis averaged a team-best 9.7 points per game in league contests and has scored in double-figures a team-high 16 times. Nine of her 10-plus point games have come against MWC foes, including in each of SDSU's five MWC wins. Her 144 assists are the most by an Aztec since 1999-2000.

The 5-9 guard is the Aztecs' second true freshman to be picked for one of the conference's three teams, joining Michelle Elliott, who garnered third-team honors in 2003-04. Davis is also one of just two freshmen and four underclassmen among the 20 players recognized by the league this year.

Demus, who is in her second season in the Scarlet & Black, ranks third in the league in steals per game (2.19) with a team and career-best 59. The junior also excelled on offense, notching her first two career 20-point games in wins over Pepperdine and Air Force. Demus is third on the team in scoring (8.8 ppg.) and second in assists (59).

BYU's Dani Kubik-Wright and TCU's Adrianne Ross shared the conference player-of-the-year award, while UNLV's Sequoia Holmes was named the MWC's top defender. BYU's Jeff Judkins captured coach-of-the-year honors after leading the Cougars to the regular-season title for the second straight year.

San Diego State faces Wyoming Wednesday in a Mountain West Conference quarterfinal match-up featuring the tournament's No. 7 versus No. 2 seeds at noon. The championship is returning to Las Vegas, Nev., and the Thomas & Mack Center after a three-year hiatus.
