Aztec Paris Johnson Named MWC Women's Basketball Player of the Week
March 1, 2010
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Paris Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Johnson scored the game-winning bucket and also hauled in the game-saving rebound in the team's 73-71 come-from-behind victory over Brigham Young last Wednesday.
After the Cougars tied the score at 71, Johnson hit the game-winning jumper in the paint with 35 seconds remaining to give the Aztecs the two-point lead. On BYU's final trip down the floor, she then secured the rebound following a missed BYU 3-pointer and later was fouled with less than two seconds left.
Johnson ended the evening with a season-best 24 points on 9-for-14 shooting and fell one rebound short of a double-double with a team-best nine, including five on the offensive glass. The 6-4 center scored 13 of the team's final 19 points of the game, making five of the Aztecs' final seven field goals. She finished with 16 of the team's 37 second-half points.
It is the sixth career MWC award for Johnson and she is the third Aztec to be honored by the conference in 2009-10, joining seniors Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) and Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.).
San Diego State plays its final regular season road game on Wednesday, when the Aztecs travel to Fort Collins, Colo. for a 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT tip-off against Colorado State at Moby Arena.
