Jan. 28, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State guard Chelsea Hopkins (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 21-27, the league office announced Monday. With her award, the Aztec senior received her second consecutive MW weekly accolade, her third of the season and fifth of her career.
Hopkins continued her impressive all-round play last week, helping SDSU to a 2-0 record with a 69-57 home victory against Nevada followed by a convincing 63-39 road win at New Mexico. Against Nevada last Wednesday, Hopkins logged her nation-leading third triple-double of the season and second within a span of three games after scoring a career-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. She also sank a season-best eight free throws on 10 attempts and came up with three steals. With the Aztecs trailing 46-42 in the second half, Hopkins tallied 11 points during a decisive 13-0 run over a stretch of two minutes that put SDSU ahead to stay at 55-46, highlighted by a 3-pointer and two and-1 conversions. With her effort, she became the first player to record three triple-doubles in MW history.
Then at New Mexico on Saturday, Hopkins notched her sixth straight double-digit scoring effort of the year with 11 points while adding game highs of seven rebounds and five assists. She also registered a blocked shot, her fourth of the season, and added a steal to raise her team-leading total to 35 on the year.
For the week, Hopkins went 12-for-29 from the field (.429) and 10-for-13 from the free throw line (.769). She averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.0 steals, helping the Aztecs maintain a share of first place in the MW standings with Fresno State.
Hopkins, who also garnered MW Player of the Week distinction by College Sports Madness for the second straight week on Monday, leads the league with an average of 7.4 assists per game, good for fourth in the country. She also occupies the No. 2 conference spot in rebounds (7.5 rpg) and assist-turnover ratio (2.2) and ranks ninth in scoring (13.6 ppg).
In addition, Hopkins' recognition marks the fifth MW weekly honor for SDSU this season after fellow classmate Courtney Clements earned such distinction in consecutive weeks as well early last month.
The Aztecs (14-5, 5-1 MW) return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they entertain Air Force at Viejas Arena, beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
