Jan. 21, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State guard Chelsea Hopkins (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been selected as the Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week for games played Jan. 14-20, the league office announced Monday. With her award, the Aztec senior earned the fourth MW weekly honor of her career and second this season.
Hopkins led SDSU to a 2-0 week with a 74-60 triumph on the road at UNLV, followed by a 66-43 home victory over Wyoming. She recorded her second triple-double of the season at UNLV last Wednesday, posting a career-high tying 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Hopkins shot 71.4 from the floor, establishing a new personal-best with 10 field goals on 14 attempts, including a 2-for-2 effort from 3-point range. The triple-double is just the sixth in MW history, and she is the only player in conference history to record multiple triple-doubles in the same season.
Then against conference co-leader Wyoming last Saturday, Hopkins came through with another all-round effort, scoring 14 points to go with game-highs of eight rebounds and eight assists while tying her collegiate best with five steals to help the Aztecs maintain a share of first place in the MW race.
For the week, Hopkins was 15-of-25 (.600) from the floor and hit 3-of-4 (.750) from the free throw line. She averaged 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 9.0 assists and 3.5 steals over the two games. Hopkins, who was also named MW Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Monday, leads the league with an average of 7.4 points per game and a 2.4 assist-turnover ratio while occupying the third spot in rebounds (7.4 rpg) and the ninth position in scoring (13.1 ppg). In addition, her assist total ranks fourth in the nation entering the week.
Hopkins is the second SDSU player to receive MW Player of the week recognition on two occasions this year after fellow classmate Courtney Clements earned such distinction in consecutive weeks last month.
The Aztecs (12-5, 3-1 MW), who are tied atop the league standings with Fresno State, return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 23, when they play host to Nevada at Viejas Arena, starting at 7 p.m. PT.
