SDSU's Chelsea Hopkins Named MW Co-Player of the Week
Jan. 16, 2012
SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Chelsea Hopkins (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named the Mountain West Conference co-Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her performances in the team's two victories over TCU and UNLV, the league office announced Monday. The honor is the first of Hopkins' career and she becomes the third different Aztec to be selected this season.
The point guard averaged 14.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3.0 steals in leading the team to a 61-46 victory over TCU and a 66-62 overtime win at UNLV, as SDSU started a conference campaign at 2-0 for just the second time in the MW's 13-year history. Hopkins notched her second double-double of the season vs. the Horned Frogs, posting a game-high 17 points to go with 13 rebounds. Her 13 rebounds are a team season-best and are the most by an Aztec guard since 2010.
This past Saturday, she scored nine of her 11 points after halftime, as the Aztecs overcame a six-point deficit to down the Lady Rebels. Hopkins assisted on what turned out to be the game-winning basket and also gave San Diego State some breathing room when she converted a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left in overtime for a four-point advantage. The junior had seven total assists and contributed four rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes of action.
Hopkins' classmates Courtney Clements (Long Beach, Calif.) and Malia Nahinu (Hayward, Calif.) were honored by the league earlier this season and SDSU now has one more award than it did during the 2010-11 campaign.
The Aztecs, whose current eight-game win streak ties as the sixth-longest in the nation, look to improve to 3-0 in conference play on Wednesday when New Mexico (6-10, 0-2) comes to Viejas Arena for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
