SDSU Tennis Places Singles Player and Two Doubles Team in NCAA Individual Championships

May 1, 2003

SAN DIEGO - The 27th-ranked San Diego State women's team and the 29th-ranked San Diego State men's team will both be represented at the 2003 NCAA Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships which begin later this month.

On the men's side, the Aztec duo of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo earned the second-seed in the 32-team field. The pair is currently ranked second in the nation and spent a two-week period at number one earlier this season. The team owns a 25-7 record this season, including a 15-3 record in dual competition.

Being seeded at the NCAA championships meets the criteria for being an All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Other criteria include reaching the round of 16 in singles or the quarterfinal round in doubles or finishing in the top 20 nationally in singles or top 10 in doubles of the final ITA rankings.

Maiberger earns his fourth All-American honor while Redondo earns the recognition for the second time in his career.

In addition, Maiberger also earned a spot in the 64-player field for the singles championship. The men's singles and doubles championships will be held May 21-26 in Athens, Ga.

On the women's side, 34th-ranked Silvia Tornier and Indra Erichsen were named the second alternate for the 32-team doubles championship, which will be contested May 20-24 in Gainesville, Fla. The Aztec pair, which is 26-4 on the season and 23-3 in dual play, will earn a spot in the field if two of the teams in the bracket are unable to compete. In addition to naming 32 doubles teams, the NCAA also selects four alternate teams, in case of scratches.

On Wednesday, the Aztec men's and women's teams found out their first round opponents in the team championship. For the first time in school history the Aztec men's team is one of 16 first and second round hosts. The San Diego State men will meet 42nd-ranked San Diego in the first round of the championship on Saturday, May 10. Match time at the SDSU Courts is set for noon PDT. That same day, the Aztec women will play 20th-ranked Fresno State in Tempe, Ariz.

Tickets for the NCAA First and Second Round matches played in San Diego may be purchased at the SDSU Courts the day of the tournament. Singles day tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with identification.
