Three Aztecs Named to All-MW Men's Tennis Team
April 27, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The No. 59 San Diego State men's tennis team had three singles players and one doubles tandem earn all-Mountain West men's tennis honors, the league announced on Thursday in San Diego at its postseason banquet. Javier Pulgar was also named Player of the Year after a stellar senior campaign.
Pulgar, SDSU's top singles player, was honored along with junior Derek Siddiqui and freshman Thorsten Bertsch. The doubles team of Bertsch and Siddiqui, meanwhile, were also recognized. The awards were chosen by the league's six head coaches.
The Aztecs were lead by Pulgar at No. 1 singles in all five of San Diego State's Mountain West contests this season as the native of Madrid, Spain, finished 3-2. After struggling in singles play at the start of league, Pulgar quickly turned it around and went on a three-match winning streak against New Mexico, TCU and UNLV. The biggest win came against No. 55 New Mexico in a 4-3 victory, but he also notched a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Freshman of the Year Nick Chappell from TCU. Pulgar is currently No. 117 in the latest ITA rankings.
Siddiqui, meanwhile, played four of his five conference matches at number two singles and finished with a 3-2 mark. Similar to Pulgar, Siddiqui dropped his first two MW matchups before finishing on a three-match winning streak against conference foes. His most notable win of the year was against three-time All-MW selection Ben Dunbar of New Mexico.
Bertsch finished Mountain West play with a 4-1 mark and played four of his five matches at No. 2 singles. His lone loss on the season came against No. 68 Damian Hume of Boise State on March 29. As with Pulgar and Siddiqui, Bertsch finished conference play on a three-match winning streak and his biggest win of the season was against Alex Lineberry of Air Force in a 4-3 victory in SDSU's league opener.
The duo of Bertsch and Siddiqui were 12-8 on the year and competed in all five conference matches this season. They finished the year on a two-match winning streak, with victories against TCU's Blake Wiggins/Will Stein and Bernard Schoeman/Rene Ruegamer of UNLV.
Second-seeded SDSU is set to play either New Mexico or Air Force in the semifinals of the Mountain West Championship. The postseason matchup is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
