Feb. 12, 2009
SAN DIEGO - The Mountain West Conference announced its 10th anniversary tennis team on Thursday. The Aztecs took four spots in all including, three men's singles players and one men's doubles team. San Diego State took four of the 10 spots on the men's anniversary team. Aztecs Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo were honored as one of three doubles teams. The pair is SDSU's most honored doubles team, tallying multiple prominent accolades. In 2002-03, the duo was named all-conference and All-Americans. Maiberger and Redondo claimed the only grand slam title in school history by winning the National Collegiate Indoor Championships in 2001. Two years later they ranked as high as No. 1 in the ITA rankings. The duo continues to hold a spot in the SDSU record books with the most career victories in doubles (59). In 2002 the pair made it to the NCAA quarterfinals and in 2003 made the best Aztec showing by reaching the NCAA finals.
Markus Dickhardt, Maiberger and Alex Waske were three of the seven singles players named to the MWC anniversary team.
San Diego State's most recent alum, Markus Dickhardt, was named the league's 2004 freshman of the year, 2007 player of the year and from 2004-07, was an all-conference singles player.
The only player to be honored twice on the anniversary team, in both singles and doubles, Maiberger was named the 2001-03 MWC player of the year and an All-American in 2001-03. Maiberger was a four-time all-conference singles player and all-academic pick. In 2002, he reached the NCAA quarterfinals and in 2003, he made it to the NCAA round of 16. Maiberger still holds multiple records at SDSU including most career individual victories (103), highest winning percentage in a season (25-3, .893), highest career winning percentage (111-28, .799) and most career victories (111).
Alex Waske rounds out the honored Aztecs. In 2000, Waske was the conference player of the year, an all-conference singles player, an academic all-conference choice, and All-American. As a San Diego State alum, Waske was a semifinalist in the 2005 Australian Open Doubles and 2006 French Open Doubles.
The MWC 10th anniversary team was selected by a combined panel of media, institutional, and conference personnel and online fan poll.
