SDSU Men's Tennis Sweeps Season Opener

SAN DIEGO - The No. 67 San Diego State men's tennis team had a strong start to its 2013 dual-match season, picking up two victories on Friday. SDSU defeated UC San Diego and UC Riverside by identical 7-0 scores at Aztec Tennis Center.
In the early match against UCSD, the Aztecs won the doubles point and never let up. The team of senior Derek Siddiqui and sophomore Andranik Khachatryan earned an 8-2 victory over Horea Porutiu and Kona Luu, before the duo of junior Shiva Sangwan and sophomore Spencer Simon won 8-3 against Max Jiganti and Guy Giubilato.
In singles action, SDSU won all six matches in straight sets. Siddiqui defeated Camill Salomon by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Thorston Bertsch got a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jiganti. After junior Hunter Nicholas topped Rajeev Herekar 7-5, 6-2, No. 123 Khachatryan sealed the victory over Ganesh Alagappan by scores of 6-2, 6-3.
In the second match against UC Riverside (0-1), the Aztecs again jumped out to an early lead in doubles play and dominated in singles action en route to the win. This time, Nicholas and Bertsch started it off with an 8-2 victory over Kevin Griffin and Marcus Vizcarra, before Siddiqui and Khachatryan clinched the point 8-1 against Luis Gastao and Calvin Ngo.
SDSU won the first five singles matches in straight sets. After Sangwan won his first set 6-1 at No. 6, he regrouped from a 6-7 (6) second-set loss to knock off Kelly Dickson 10-7 in a super tiebreaker. Khachatryan's 6-1, 6-3 win over Ngo at No. 4 sealed the Aztecs second dual-match victory of the day.
It was the fifth-straight season San Diego State defeated UCR in dual-match play, with all five matches ending with scores of 7-0.
The Aztecs are back in action Jan. 25 in Los Angeles against USC in the ITA Kick-Off, and will face either Georgia Tech or Fresno State on Jan. 26.
